4 Things All Dream Homes Have in Common

Most of us dream about having the perfect home; a place that is ideal for our needs and how we want to grow, that fits our own personal style and values, and where we can comfortably be ourselves.

However few of us believe that we can actually possess our dream home. But whatever your budget, you can turn your home into the best possible space for you even if it is not exactly scaled to the dream you initially had in mind.

A great place to start is to assess a few things dream homes all seem to have in common and see how you can incorporate them into your own space.

1. Luxurious fixtures and fittings

Dream homes always seem to have the nicest fixtures and fittings from designer faucets to ornate door knockers. And while high end fixtures can cost a pretty penny, there are plenty of gorgeous dupes out there that give the big buck appeal while keeping you on budget. However even the more pricey fixtures can feel affordable when you’re not digging into a full on renovation. Plus, this is something you can upgrade all at once - or slowly over time. It’s totally up to you. We recommend splurging on faucets and sink hardware, one statement light, and a door knocker. Everything else can go more affordable, such as kitchen cabinet handles, towel racks, door knobs, etc. When in doubt, we like to go for the rule of 80/20. Opt for 20% to be high end statement items and the rest of the 80% will end up looking far more expensive.

2. Space

When building dream homes, most people do not ask the home builders to give them as little space as possible. They opt for spacious, light, often open-plan properties that allow them to move freely and enjoy home life to the full.

You can make your home more spacious too, even if it feels tiny to you. How? There are lots of things you can do from removing all of the clutter to installing built-in wardrobes that will maximize space, to simply moving the furniture around to improve the flow. Sometimes, the key is to simply remove a piece of furniture from a room for good. This will instantaneously return a certain amount of physical space to your home while opening up options for how you reorganize the space. Add natural light and you’re golden.

3. Storage

Speaking of storage, dream homes always have tons of storage space - from walk-in closets to garage storage racks. This is one area where you can compete on a budget by using hidden storage like ottomans, under-bed storage, and the likes, to ensure everything has a place and messiness is not an issue. It might not be a walk-in closet and dressing room, but when you have a place for everything, your space will luxurious regardless.

4. Luxurious bathrooms

Dream homes almost always have spacious bathrooms that are intended for relaxing in. If you fancy some of that for yourself, but you’re on a tight budget, recreate the look with faux marble tiles and sinks which will look almost as good for a fraction of the price. You can also install roll-top baths for less than one might think, and you can even buy kits that will turn a normal bath into a spa bath complete with jets and lights.

And don’t forget - while a building our own dream home is a fun fantasy, it is the space we work make our own that brings us joy and freedom.
