How To Apply Leather Paint Like A Pro

Whether looking for a way to spruce up an old bag or add a different hue to a leather coat, did you know that the use of leather paint can restore or change the color of an already leather item? In fact, you can even use it to touch up or completely repaint a leather couch or chair!

While it sounds risky, it's actually quite a straightforward process, and relatively affordable as most leather paints can be purchased online for a minimal price which, compared to buying a new leather coat or handbag, makes hardly a dent. Here’s how to do it like a pro.

Prepare the Leather

If you are painting leather shoes, remove the laces. If the object you are going to be painting has dirt on it, remove it with warm water and a bit of soap - and if you need a bit more friction, use an old toothbrush to remove the stain.

Then let it dry - as painting wet leather is not ideal. The next step is to use a cloth or cotton wool and apply a deglaze. This will take the sheen off of the leather that makes it shiny, but do not apply too much pressure. Once complete, the leather will look dull - let it dry for a few minutes.

Next, apply the paint with a flat or sponge brush. Be sure to apply it in thin and even layers - if the paint is too thick, can crack. Try to get the best leather paint (we recommend Angelus paint) - then, depending on the brightness of the leather, repeat the painting steps above as you see fit, but leave 15 to 30 minutes between each layer.

Drying

Once completed, leave it for 24 hours or more to dry. This will help to ensure that the paints have thoroughly dried for the next step, which is key to ensuring that there is no cracking or peeling.

Finisher

A finisher is required to seal the paint so that if caught in the rain for example, it will not run off. Much like the paint itself, apply it with a brush or rag, an apply a thin and even coat. Once adequately finished, let it dry for 24 hours.

Shoes

Going for repainted shoes? You will need to rehydrate them, and the best way to do this is to apply a cream or polish. It may take several coats to bring back the initial sheen or luster of the leather. If applying paint to shoes, we suggest you waterproof them, but just be sure to apply any waterproofing in a well-ventilated area.
