101: Keeping Indoor Plants Clean

Some of us know how hard it is to keep plants alive, but what about keeping them clean? Clean plants are generally much healthier than dirty ones, so when you maintain their cleanliness, you’re also doing wonders for their health. Here’s our 101 for easy ways to keep your indoor plants clean.

Dusting Your Plants

Did you know you can dust your plants? Use a damp cloth or paper towel and gently wipe your plant’s leaves. You can use a toothbrush or pipe cleaner for fuzzy-leafed plants.

Washing Plants

If water deposits or other particles on your plants won’t come off with a gentle dusting, we recommend washing your plants. Larger plants can go in the shower! We like to dunk smaller plants upside down in room-temperature water before letting them dry out.

How To Avoid Mold

It’s pretty gross to find mold growing on our plants or in their soil, so how do we avoid it? Make sure each plant gets good sunlight and that the pots can drain. Excess moisture causes mold problems in plants.

Remove Dead Plant Parts

Here’s an amazing tip for keeping indoor plants clean: always remove dead leaves and buds. Clipping dead leaves actually helps the plant reallocate energy and nutrients from dead leaves and stems, so get rid of them whenever you see them. The same goes for leaves and buds that have already fallen off—pick these up and toss them out.

Getting Rid of Gnats

Soil gnats can get bad enough to make us want to quit indoor gardening. Thankfully, we’ve got the perfect solution: mix about 1/4 cup of red wine or fruit juice with a few drops of dish soap in a bowl and leave it near your plants. After a few hours, you should see dead gnats in your trap.

Plants are a wonderful way to make your home more inviting, and they’re one of the top interior design trends of 2022. We hope these tricks help you keep your plants healthy and your home looking fabulous!
