2 Easy Paths To Improving The Kitchen

The kitchen the workhorse of the home. So much of daily life occurs in this multi-functional room. It provides space for eating solo, eating on the go, or eating in groups. Professional work, schoolwork, and hobbies alike are all tackled here. It’s a place to prep, to plan, and to nurture. It is a place to talk, create, and just be - and comfortable and functional are at the top of the want list - aside from aesthetics, that is.

So we thought we’d share what we consider to be the two easiest routes to a kitchen improvement.

1- Going Big

For larger projects where walls may move or extensions may be added, we always bring in a contractor - even if we generally lean more towards DIY. Why? Because for larger scale projects, it’s often prudent for a professional not only to lend their expertise, but also their liability. This takes a ton of pressure off your shoulders and in our opinion, is well worth the cost.

The first step is to ensure that your contractor is appropriately licensed to do the work for which you are hiring them. Check with the Better Business Bureau for any claims or complaints, as well. Next, ask for references from completed projects, including pictures. Thoroughly talk through your vision and expectations to make sure you are both on the same page. Once everything has been determined and agreed upon, ensure you get all of the details to include the timeline in writing.

2 - An Easy Update

In a kitchen, when you don’t have space, that’s when you know you need it most. High-quality cabinets that actually fit your kitchen wares and utensils can make a world of difference - not only for keeping clutter free, but for staying clutter free. After all - the key to a well kept home is having a designated place for everything. With that in mind, give yourself the go-ahead to change your existing cabinets with custom kitchen cabinets. Not only will this dramatically improve the way you use your existing space, but you’ll get a cosmetic update to boot. We love a good 2 for 1.

With custom kitchen cabinets, you are able to choose from a wide-ranging variety of cabinet styles, door styles, and cabinet finishes and colors. It’s a great opportunity to show your style and personality within the home. Mix and match with complementary colors or go a traditional and classic route.

As you are planning out the new cabinetry, keep in mind how the current cabinets have underserved your needs. Do we have a large pot and pan collection that requires better storage? Would we like our sheet pans to be stored vertically? And since we believe in investing for the long haul, will pull-out drawers be easier to maneuver as we age instead of bending down to dig through cabinets?

Now that the kitchen is updated and upgraded, be sure to take care of it. Make regular cleaning part of your home routine. If you stay on top of smaller tasks, they will not seem insurmountable. After all, you have created a kitchen that is beautiful and just the way you want - you should invite some friends over and then sit back and enjoy the amazing fruits of your labor.
