Capsule Collection: The Only 5 Bags You Need

It’s easy to purchase a bag simply because it’s gorgeous, has a particular status associated with it, or because you need a specific type for a specific event. However when it comes down to bags we actually need vs bags we simply want, the list diminishes to 5 basic types of bags. Keep one of each of these in your arsenal, and you’ll be prepped for pretty much any scenario. Consider the following your capsule collection for bags:

Weekender

Even if you don’t spend a ton of weekends away or take short trips, A weekender is a must. Whether you only want to bring carry-on hand luggage for a quick stay or simply need to bring a ton of stuff with you to the park with the kiddo, a weekender is an ultimate carryall for life.

Generally, they are designed to be hardwearing and can fit much more than they look at first glance. Don’t be tempted to get a weekend with just one big compartment. Instead, think about what you might use it for most and go from there. We love using one in lieu of a traditional laptop bag.

Backpack

Perhaps you aren’t thinking about going hiking right now or taking classes - but who knows what the future will bring? Plus, who doesn’t want to be hands free some of the time? Stick to small backpacks that have just enough room for keys, cards, phone, and maybe a bottle of water - or think bigger.

A larger backpack with side bottle holders, multiple zips, a key holder, and other compartments will mean you have a backpack that can do it all.

The bonus with backpacks is that they distribute the weight evenly across your shoulders - so you won’t get the horrible side of shoulder ache when carrying larger loads.

Opt for a neutral tone in a sturdy material that gets better with time, such as leather or deep canvas.

Tote

A tote can almost become your go-to bag - replacing handbags, clutches, and more. While some totes are simple and made with a thin layer of cotton, there are plenty of other options, from a designer tote bag to a recycled plastic tote bag. Of course, you can always make your own!

Toast bags are great grab-and-go options where you might have an errand or two to run, but nothing too much.

Clutch

Sometimes we don’t need a bag to carry everything; we need a bag that will tie the outfit together and hold our phone and a little bit of cash. A clutch bag is a perfect way to achieve all of that.

If you don’t find social events fun, then holding a clutch can give you something to do with your hands if you find they might otherwise be fidgeting or awkward.

Look for a clutch with beads, sparkles, and other embellishments to stand out even more. Oddly enough, going for a clutch with a personality all on its own is a great way to complement an even wider range of outfits that a simple, minimalist option.

Handbag

Important appointment? Handbag. Interview? Handbag. Handbags work for almost all types of scenarios, and when you have a beautiful, formed, patent handbag (beware of grazes!), you’re ready for anything.

With the big shift for remote working, many people travel between the office and the home - meaning at the very least, your handbag should be able to carry a laptop - and have sturdy handles.
