With all the trends out there, sometimes it can be a little tricky to figure out what’s going to last and what’s more of just a flash in the pan. I think that’s what I love so much about fringe. It’s an unexpected classic. And believe it or not, it’s also one of the oldest style trends ever documented, going all the way back to the days of Mesopotamia. Yup, that’s right. You heard me. Mesopotamia.
But let’s get back to today, and how to wear it IRL without coming across like a Halloween costume on laundry day. Because as much as I love fringe, it’s not something you can just toss on with anything and expect it to work. So here are a few tricks I’ve come up with over the years to make fringe just as easy to work into your wardrobe as your favorite pair of jeans.
1. Start with accessories: If you’re not sure how to start, a great pair of fringed accessories, like a bracelet or a pair of shoes is a simple way to ease into the trend without a huge commitment.
2. Go with a neutral color: Fringe is already going to be an eye catcher on its own. Keep the color muted and let that gorgeous texture do its thing! And p.s. if you love color, keeping your fringe neutral will make it even easier to wear with your favorite hues.
3. Choose one statement piece and keep the rest simple: This is probably my favorite way to wear fringe, as I’m a sucker for a fabulous fringe skirt. It works with basic tops, so styling it is a true no-brainer.
And here’s the best part about these three tricks. If you stick to them, that fringe piece that you invest in now is going to last you a lifetime. After all, it is a classic!
Oh - and here’s one more personal trick that I like to use whenever I want to try out a new trend - before you buy, make sure you research, research, research! I like to find photos of a trend styled in a way I like and then find something similar to that item so I know it will work when I style it on myself.
One tool that makes this process a LOT easier (not to mention more fun) is Piccing - use it on your iPhone, your Android or your desktop, upload a photo of something you like, “picc” up to five items in the photo, and instantly shop options for that exact or similar item. And bonus - happen to find something that you love but costs more than your rent? Piccing is a great way to find alternatives out there in the world wide web that are just as good, but within your budget. There are so many different ways to use Piccing - but don’t say I didn’t warn you, because it can be incredibly addicting…
